Zitkala-Ša Park is a beautiful new park in Arlington honoring the Dakota writer, musician, educator and political activities Zitkala-Ša. It was a cool coincidence to go to her park on Indigenous People’s Day!
Lovely open field, basketball court, playgrounds for little ones and big kids, shaded picnic table area and even bistro tables! ⚠️Just a small heads up that the only way to get to the tall slide is through a rope course inside the orange tower. My kids didn’t feel comfortable climbing up (pretty high) but I’m sure its safe, just a comfort level thing!
Zitkala-Ša is pronounced Zit-KA-la Sha according to the @ArlParksrec website and she co-composed the first American Indian opera, founded the National Council of American Indians and authored many books on her experiences. Her name is Lakota for Red Bird. She died in 1938 in Washington DC and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery just a few miles from the park.
