Theodore Roosevelt Island with Kids is always a great idea! The whole island is actually a huge memorial to the former president. It was home to the Nacatchtank tribe in the 1600s. Lots different trails along the river and through the forest with views of Georgetown. I was surprised by how much the kids enjoyed being surrounded by nature right in the middle of the city. As we crossed the pedestrian bridge from Arlington, they could barely contain their excitement, pointing at ducks swimming below and the occasional rower gliding by on the Potomac River.

The Swamp Trail (1.5-Mile Loop)
When we set out on the Swamp Trail, I wasn’t expecting it to be such a hit with the kids, but it turned out to be the perfect adventure. As soon as we stepped onto the boardwalk section, they were on the lookout for frogs, turtles, and any movement in the marshy waters around us. My kids spotted a turtle sunbathing on a log. Even though there is a boardwalk, it is uneven at times and I would not say its stroller friendly. The Swamp Trail had just the right mix of nature and excitement to keep everyone engaged, and it’s one we’ll definitely do again.

The Woods Trail (1/3 Mile)
The Woods Trail was a short but lovely detour on our island adventure. It’s such a short trail, but my kids loved it! For a peaceful nature break, this little trail delivered big smiles.
The Upland Trail (3/4 Mile)
I think this 3/4-mile loop is a nice mid-size walk especially for toddlers. What I loved most was how the trail occasionally opened up to views of the Potomac River. You can watch kayakers glide by. The trail eventually led us back to the Roosevelt Memorial Plaza, which gave us a nice spot to wrap up our day with some fun facts about Theodore Roosevelt. It was a great combination of nature and history, and the kids left asking when we could come back.
