Baltimore Day Trip Itinerary with Google Map to Plan

Maryland

A Baltimore day trip is a great idea for anyone living or visiting the East Coast with kids or families. Our family lives in DC and we’re lucky to live within a 1 hour drive of Baltimore. It’s a wonderful escape when my family needs a change of scenery. Whether we’re craving fresh seafood, diving into some hands-on science fun, or want to stroll along the waterfront, Baltimore has something for everyone—especially if you’ve got little ones!

Baltimore Day Trip Morning Itinerary

Stop #1 - Breakfast at Miss Shirley’s Café Baltimore Fav

Kick off your day trip with a hearty breakfast at Miss Shirley’s Café, a Baltimore favorite known for its Southern-inspired comfort food. The café’s welcoming atmosphere and kid-friendly menu make it perfect for families. Whether your little ones want something simple like pancakes or are feeling adventurous enough to try their famous fried chicken and waffles, there’s something for everyone. Check out their "Crab Cake & Fried Green Tomato Eggs Benedict"—a true taste of Maryland in every bite! And don’t worry, the café has plenty of high chairs and crayons to keep the kids entertained while you enjoy your morning coffee!

Recommendation: Go to Miss Shirley's Cafe Inner Harbor as it is only 2 blocks from the National Aquarium!

Stop #2 - World Famous National Aquarium - A Baltimore Day Trip Must!

Aquarium Baltimore maryland

After breakfast, walk just 2 blocks to one of Baltimore’s crown jewels: the National Aquarium. This place is a must-visit, especially if you have kids. The aquarium’s massive tanks and immersive exhibits will keep the whole family in awe. Highlights include the mesmerizing Jellyfish Invasion, where you can see dozens of jellyfish species floating in stunning tanks, and the Dolphin Discovery, where you can watch playful dolphins leap and splash around.

I wrote about our parking and family review here.

For families, it’s best to arrive as soon as the aquarium opens to avoid the midday crowds. Keep an eye out for the interactive touch pools in the Living Seashore exhibit, where kids can gently touch rays and horseshoe crabs. My kids loved the puffins! You’ll also want to plan for a solid two hours here—there’s so much to see, and the kids will love the chance to watch sharks, sea turtles, and tropical fish up close.

Stop #3 - Lunch and Exploring the Inner Harbor

inner harbor Baltimore restaurant

After a fun-filled morning at the aquarium, time for food! For an authentic Baltimore experience, head to Phillips Seafood, a staple of the city’s dining scene located right along the harbor. The restaurant is known for its fresh, local seafood, and if you haven’t tried Maryland’s famous crab cakes yet, now’s your chance! The Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes here are a must-try, bursting with flavor and showcasing the best of Baltimore’s seafood tradition. If your kids aren’t into seafood, don’t worry—they also offer family-friendly options like mac and cheese or chicken tenders. Plus, the views of the water from the restaurant are a relaxing way to unwind after a busy morning.

For a more casual option, consider grabbing a quick bite at Shake Shack or Nando’s —both offer delicious food with easy access to outdoor seating, perfect for a family on the go.

Stop #4 - Walk Along Inner Harbor on Baltimore Day Trip

day trip to Baltimore harbor

Once lunch is wrapped up, take a leisurely walk along the Inner Harbor. There’s something truly magical about the waterfront, with its picturesque views and lively atmosphere. The kids will love watching the boats come and go, and you’ll find plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the scenery.

For some interactive fun, consider renting a paddle boat shaped like a dragon or a swan. It’s a great way to burn off some energy and gives the kids a fun, hands-on adventure on the water. If you prefer to stay on land, you can let the kids enjoy the Rash Field Playground, a newly renovated outdoor space filled with climbing structures, slides, and splash fountains.

Stop #5 - Choose Your Own Adventure either Maryland Science Center for Elementary and Under or Art Museum for Older Kids and Adults

day in Baltimore maryland

Visit the Maryland Science Center

Next up is the Maryland Science Center, an absolute hit with my kids. I wrote all about our visit and where to park here. With exhibits that cater to all ages, you can easily spend a couple of hours here exploring everything from dinosaurs to outer space. The Dinosaur Mysteries exhibit is always a crowd favorite, where kids can dig for fossils and get up close to life-sized dinosaur models. Another standout is the Davis Planetarium, where you can take in an awe-inspiring show about stars and planets—a great way to introduce young minds to the wonders of space.

For families who enjoy a cinematic experience, the IMAX theater is also an option. They often have educational and entertaining films in 3D, which is an exciting treat for kids (and parents!). From hands-on science experiments to interactive displays, the Maryland Science Center is a perfect blend of learning and fun that will keep the whole family engaged.

Explore the American Visionary Art Museum

For a dose of creativity and inspiration, finish your afternoon with a trip to the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM). This isn’t your typical art museum—it’s full of quirky, colorful, and unconventional art that tells fascinating stories. The museum showcases works from self-taught artists, which means you’ll find everything from massive sculptures made of found objects to vibrant paintings with unique perspectives.

Even the kids will be intrigued here—whether it’s the giant Whirligig sculptures outside or the quirky collections inside, there’s something about AVAM that captures the imaginations of all ages. It’s a fun and educational stop, sparking conversations and giving kids a new appreciation for creativity. If your family enjoys art that’s a little offbeat, this is a must-see!

Stop #6 - Sunset Views and Dinner

Baltimore family easy things to do

Walk to Federal Hill Park

As the day winds down, take a short walk or drive up to Federal Hill Park for some of the best views in Baltimore. This elevated spot offers a panoramic view of the Inner Harbor and the downtown skyline—perfect for soaking in the sunset. It’s a beautiful and peaceful way to end your day trip, and the open green space is ideal for kids to run around while parents enjoy the view.

This is also a fantastic location for family photos. Bring a blanket, and you can turn it into a small picnic as the sun sets. For a quiet moment or a last chance to snap a few scenic shots of your day in Charm City, Federal Hill Park is the ideal spot.

Dinner in Fells Point or Little Italy

For dinner, head to one of Baltimore’s vibrant neighborhoods like Fells Point or Little Italy. Both offer plenty of casual dining options that are perfect for families.

In Fells Point, try Kooper’s Tavern, a laid-back spot with a welcoming vibe and a menu that includes everything from burgers to crab cakes. They’ve got a great kid’s menu, making it an easy choice for dinner after a long day. The outdoor seating provides a great view of the cobblestone streets and historic buildings, adding to the charming, relaxed atmosphere.

Alternatively, if your family is in the mood for Italian, Little Italy is just a short drive away. Amicci’s is a fantastic choice, offering generous portions of pasta, pizza, and other Italian favorites. The cozy, family-friendly setting is perfect for unwinding, and the kids will love diving into a plate of spaghetti or pizza while you savor classic Italian dishes like lasagna or chicken Parmesan.
