We had so much fun at Fort Ward Park in Alexandria as a family! There are lovely paved trails all around the park with a Civil War fort in the middle. The fort was 1 of 68 built to defend Washington DC during the Civil War. It is really well preserved with 90% of the earthwork walls still intact. My kids loved biking and scooting around but stay on the paths as the earthwork walls are not meant to be touched.
While the park is open Sunrise to Sunset daily, please note that the small Museum is open Thur & Friday 11 AM to 4 PM, Sat. 11 AM to 5 PM and Sunday 1 - 5 PM.

Playgrounds at Fort Ward Alexandria
There are 2 nice playgrounds down the hill from the fort but inside of the park.

Parking and Restrooms at Fort Ward Park Alexandria
There are 2 parking lots at Fort Ward Park. One immediately on your right when you enter and the next behind the Museum. There are nice clean permanent restrooms behind the second parking lot and on the way to the playgrounds.
