Fairfax City Independence Evening Show and Fireworks (July 2, 2023)

I believe this is the largest fireworks show in Fairfax County at the Fairfax High School

  • The Fireworks show will be on Sunday, July 2nd from 6:30 - 10:30 PM.
  • 6/19/23 Update: The fireworks show will now be back to the stadium! Check out their website for all the details below.
  • No on-site parking so please use the shuttle service. One mom recommends parking at Woodson High School and using the shuttle from there.
  • Food trucks and food vendors at the high school.

More information and photos from previous years are on their website.

Fairfax City Independence Day Parade (July 4, 2023)

The City of Fairfax's Independence Day Parade and Evening Show is the most popular in Fairfax County and such a fun tradition! I have been once (pre-kids!) and it was so much fun but also busy so below are tips I've heard from other moms.

  • The Parade is Tuesday, July 4th at 10 AM Rain or Shine
  • It loops around Old Town Fairfax on University Drive, Main Street, and Chain Bridge Road.
  • I've heard that some people use lawn chairs to reserve shady spots the day before!
  • The parade features a diverse array of participants, including 9 local marching bands, community organizations, colorful floats, and even historical reenactors.
  • MOM TIP: Someone mentioned bringing fan misters as it's a long parade and can be hot in the sun!
  • Lots of food trucks and food vendors at the parade.

More information and photos from previous years are on their website.

Arlington Spots to View DC Fireworks

The Netherlands Carillon is the only spot I've tried, pre-kids! (but you do have to park far and maybe walk 0.5 to 1 mile). But Stay Arlington has a great blog post with 5 spots to view the National Mall Fireworks from Arlington! It includes lots of details plus Instagram posts from those spots.

Alexandria City Fireworks

  1. USA/Alexandria Birthday Celebration - July 8, 2023 from 6 - 9:45 PM. I went once pre-kids and this is a great fireworks show without the National Mall crowds. Although it can still get crowded so recommend going earlier.

Loudoun County 4th of July Northern Virginia Events

  1. Star Spangled Parade at South Riding - June 30, 2023 (kids can dress up their bike, wagon, stroller or car to join!)
  2. Leesburg Concert and Fireworks on July 4th at 6 PM and Parade at 10 AM
  3. Purcellville Independence Day Parade 11 AM on July 4th
  4. Dirt Farm Brewing 4th of July open 5-9 PM (and across the road from our family's favorite, Great Country Farms!)
  5. Hillsboro Independence Day Fireworks June 27, 2023 (We drove past this last year and it looks amazing! Check out their website for pictures and a fun option a week before the holiday weekend.)

4th of July Kids Gear from Amazon

Thought these light-up necklaces are cool for kids while waiting for fireworks.

Can't forget flags for waving at the parade! I like these ones because they don't have a sharp top part.

And these Potato Sack Race Bags are fun for a backyard party. Comes with headbands and prize medals too!
